Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil stripping along two sections of the route of a new water main. At one site, the pipeline crossed the line of a possible Roman road; two cropmark enclosures appeared to be aligned on the road. Remnants of medieval ridge and furrow were visible on aerial photographs of the area. During the watching brief, no trace of the Roman road was identified, although two fragments of prehistoric flint, a small quantity of Iron Age pottery and an undated pit containing heat-cracked pebbles were found. At the second site, near which cropmarks, a motte and bailey castle and medieval ridge and furrow had been recorded, no archaeological remains were observed. [AIP] |
