Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the renewal of a water main along the northern verge and metalled surface of New Hill/Tuxford Road. The groundworks crossed two area of archaeological potential: a small cluster of farm buildings around Pond and Willoughby Farms (area 1); and the area close to the Church (area 2). Although no archaeological features were identified in area 1, it was thought possible that features may survive below the level of made ground. In area 2, unsuspected deposits of valley peat along the Bevercotes Beck were recorded. In area 2, part of the graveyard north of the church was visibly low lying and probably also occupied by peat deposits - this indicated the potential for the survivial of waterlogged, well preserved, archaeological deposits to have survivied within the historic core of the village.
