Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in respect of proposals to stabilise the foundations of a garage which lay within the area of a moated site, believed to be medieval in date, which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The farmhouse at the site was a Grade II Listed Building which retained some of its medieval fabric, although it had been substantially altered in the 18th-early 19th centuries. During the evaluation, the foundations of a wall were revealed and 17th-18th century pottery was found between the cobbles of an 18th century yard surface. Rubble and rubbly clay overlying the yard were in turn overlain by a garden soil containing large quantities of Roman pottery, which had almost certainly been imported to the site. [AIP] |
