Abstract: |
A three week excavation recorded features in advance of the construction of an access road proposed to serve The Deep Marine Interpretation Centre, to be built at Sammy's Point. The subject of the investigation was elements of the Hull Citadel, constructed 1681-90, which were known to lie on the route of the road. Three trenches were placed along this route. Elements of the rampart of the Citadel were recorded. Some rampart deposits were closely dated, by documentary and archaeological evidence, to the autumn of 1681. A brick-built scarp facing the rampart was perhaps of a similar date. Later works on the berm were also recorded. The Citadel moat was shown to have been lined at this point: with a wall ascribed to the works of 1681-90 on its inner edge, and by a counterscarp of 1806-11 along its outer lip. Finds included pottery, clay pipes, building materials and other artefacts. These were accompanied by food debris and waterlogged environmental evidence. [Au(abr)] |
