Abstract: |
<summary>In May 1992 work on re-flooring the west end of the nave, the removal of box pews, and the building of a new organ loft was observed. No trace of medieval flooring survived {italon}in situ{italoff}, although two plain late medieval glazed floor tiles were found loose in the soil. Just north of the centre of the nave one complete and two fragmentary red sandstone grave slabs had been set in the ground surface, probably in 1821 when the box pews were fitted. The complete slab was coffin-shaped, with traces of an incised, long-stemmed cross, its foot flanked by small leaves and its head probably formed by four opposed petals/?fleurs-de-lys. This slab was probably mid-13th/late 14th century in date. The fragmentary slabs were undecorated. The slabs were left {italon}in situ{italoff} and covered with a protective layer of sand before the new floor was laid. {italon}Sec(21c){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} WA1676 |
