Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The site lay adjacent to a Roman road and close to the focus of Roman settlement at Northwich. Examination of available data indicated that the site did not contain any archaeological deposits of national importance or SAMs. However, antiquarian reports of the discovery of Roman lead salt pans, although ambiguous in their locational details, were thought to evidence a Roman salt working centre nearby. Development and redevelopment of the site since the late 1700's had locally impacted the archaeological potential of the site. However, a series of land (and building) collapses in the late 1800's and early 1900's, which resulted in a number of flooded voids appearing on the site, would have completely destroyed the archaeological potential of the site. In these circumstances, it was considered that the archaeological potential of the site had been compromised to a point where redevelopment would have no adverse impact. [Au(adp)] |
