Abstract: |
<summary>Trial-trenches and trial-pits were excavated prior to the construction of the Blackwall Tunnel Third Bore, to examine structures, geological features and chemical contamination which might cause problems during the construction of the tunnel. Desk-based assessment carried out in 1991 identified the possible presence of "Tilbury IV" deposits and of remains of the docks and slipways of the 17th century Blackwall shipyard, in the area on the north bank of the Thames. The evaluation revealed a layer of peat with large pieces of wood and a blue/brown clay deposit. A large red brick-vaulted drain or culvert was found cutting the natural deposits before the construction of the dock. Remains of the 17th century wet dock and access ramp and successive alterations of the 18th and 19th centuries were found. On the south bank of the Thames the excavations revealed 19th century activity; due to the high concentration of chemical contamination and disturbance on the site, it was not possible to say that this area was devoid of evidence for occupation prior to the 19th century. {italon}AIP{italoff}{spacea}{italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} BCW92, GBT92 (Museum of London Site Codes) |
