Abstract:
The archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The assessment concluded that the potential for remains of the prehistoric and Roman periods was low and that there was no reason to suspect that there would be any remains of Saxon date on the site. There was a moderate potential for remains of medieval date, similar to those recently recorded from the Agrevo site directly opposite the study site, where 11th to 13th century activity along the High Street frontage was evident. Cartographic evidence suggested that the High Street frontage of the site was partly developed from at least 1800, while the remainder of the site comprised undeveloped backlands, gardens and woods. From c.1925/1938 onwards the site was comprehensively developed as a garage complex, with attendant impacts on any underlying archaeological deposits. On the basis of the available evidence, it was considered unlikely that any archaeological deposits now present on the study site would have survived the cumulative impact of demolition, remediation and redevelopment.
