Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the site was undertaken in response to a condition on the planning permission for the residential and commercial redevelopment of the site. Overall the study site was thought to have had a low archaeological potential for the prehistoric, Roman and Saxon/early medieval periods. The site was thought to have a low to moderate potential for the medieval period with traces of agricultural activity and/or land division likely to be represented. The study site was thought to have a good archaeological potential for the post-medieval period with traces of agricultual and horticultural activity spanning the period 1500 and c.1747 being likely to be present. More importantly, however, the site at 168-180 Clapham High Street was partly occupied by a number of buildings dating to c.1747 to c.1815. Previous development of the site was likely to have had a severe but highly localised impact on any archaeologcial deposits which might have been present. The report recommended that the buildings at No.s 168-172, 176-178 and No 180 Clapham High Street be archaeologically recorded. [Au(adp)]
