Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was carried out prior to a residential development at 2-3 West Street, Wimborne. This demonstrated a low intensity of medieval activity. Few features were firmly dated to the medieval phase of occupation, largely as a result of the low incidence of diagnostic ceramic finds. Being on the medieval street frontage the site was expected to reveal significant medieval remains, but other than scattered post holes, evidence for substantial buildings was lacking. The site was not heavily built up in the Middle Ages. The investigation nevertheless provided important evidence for the early development of the town of Wimborne, in an area where the former presence of uncellared post-medieval buildings allowed some confidence in the results.
