Abstract: |
Two trial holes were excavated to investigate the structure of an upstanding bridge, which carried a drive for Compton Verney House. The bridge was a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Warwickshire no. 75, and was probably constructed between 1769 and 1772. The original rubble infill of the bridge was revealed and evidence was observed which suggested that the parapets may have been replaced. No traces of original carriageway surfaces were found. It was concluded that archaeological recording should ideally be carried out during proposed construction works, as evidence of earlier repairs and possible early surfaces could be affected. [AIP] |
