Abstract: |
Five evaluation trenches were cut by a mechanical excavator. In the two western trenches, car park layers were removed to reveal demolished building debris covering the foundations of buildings of brick and concrete construction, some of which dated from the 20th century and the earliest phase of construction was likely to have been late 17th to early 18th century. To the rear of the Bugle, archaeological deposits were encountered. The only medieval features found were in trench four, which was a gully and was possibly a field boundary. Alongside this a large subrectangular feature may have indicated the position of a small building. The presence of brick, roofing tile and small quantities of glaze pottery suggested a post-medieval date for the structure. A few bowl shaped features cut into the natural were exposed, also post-medieval in date. [Au(abr)] |
