Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site of a bridge which was to be widened and strengthened was undertaken. The bridge was a Scheduled Ancient Monument (No. 320) and a Grade II Listed Building, consisting of an 18th century three-arched masonry structure which had replaced a medieval stone bridge on the same site. The bridge had been widened and refurbished in the early 1870s with the addition of iron supports on either side of the carriageway. Small-scale archaeological excavation on the northern side of the bridge had revealed traces of a stone structure, interpreted as a section of the medieval quay wall. On the waterfront to the south of the bridge, more extensive excavation had revealed waterlogged deposits where 13th century revetments and docks had survived to a height of 2m. It was concluded that the area of Bristol Bridge and its immediate environs was likely to have preserved nationally important archaeological remains. Detailed excavation in advance of any development was recommended. [AIP] |
