Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken of a site proposed for development as a cinema complex. The evaluation area was restricted to a small area in the south-east corner of the site due to soil contamination from an old gasworks, or disturbance by former swimming pools as part of a former leisure complex. The area evaluated had formerly been covered by terraced housing dating from the early 20th century. Trial trenching confirmed this, and showed much of the area had been disturbed down to depths of 1.8m through cellaring and relatively recent dumping activities. Consequently no areas of undisturbed archaeology earlier than the modern period were found in situ. The boundary wall of the medieval friary which was thought to be in the area was not found.
