Abstract: |
Five trial trenches were excavated as part of the archaeological evaluation, which identified remains of medieval to recent date, including several medieval ditches, a medieval and post-medieval ploughsoil and structural remains of the demolished 18th/19th century Perdiswell Hall. The medieval evidence suggested a relatively high-status settlement, possibly a manor house or estate-centre. The settlement appeared to have been occupied between the 12th and 15th centuries, after which time it was probably largely given over to agriculture until the construction of Perdiswell Hall and its surrounding gardens in the late 18th century. The later evidence reflected the establishment of the mid 20th century military airfield at Perdiswell and the impact of modern light industry. Archaeological evidence was supported to some extent by historic and cartographic evidence, which provided a context for medieval settlement in the area and supporting documentation for the later periods of the site's history.
