Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted prior to the proposed development of new school buildings. Two machine-dug trenches were investigated. The natural clay remained undisturbed throughout the majority of the site, with one ditch of layer post-medieval date being found in the eastern end of the first trench. The clay was truncated at the western end of the trench and was overlain by a man-made layer, probably early 20th century in date. These features and the natural clay were sealed by a subsoil layer, which in turn was sealed by topsoil. There were no medieval or earlier features or finds in either of the trenches and the report concluded that there was no evidence in the evaluation trenches for settlement or human activity on the site before the later post-medieval period.
