Abstract:
The assessment, produced to accompany a planning application for redevelopment, was concentrated on Barrington House and the area immediately around it. The area held the potential to reveal a large amount of evidence for the earliest occupation of London with an excavation at Barrington House itself revealing part of the Roman fort defences while excavation in the surrounding area revealed Roman houses dating back to before AD 54, and the Roman street system. The archaeological evidence from the area tended to corroborate the suggestion that it formed a focus for the re-establishment of London during the later Saxon period. Evidence of 10th/11th century occupation consisted of structures cut into the 'dark earth' deposit and numerous pits. Maps and documentary sources from the post-medieval period indicated that the area was densely occupied by buildings throughout that period. The report concluded that there was negligible chance of significant survival beneath the footprint of the standing building. Consequently the greater part of the proposed redevelopment scheme would have little impact on the archaeology of the area. However, proposed excavation along the Love Lane frontage to the north may have had the potential to disturb archaeological levels. [Au(adp)]
