Abstract: |
The walls observed in the service trenches and the eastern wall within the foundation trench formed part of a continuous wall recorded for a distance of 110m; this represented the counterscarp wall on the outside of the Dock Lines ditch. The western wall in the foundation trench was part of the scarp wall marking the inside of the ditch. Interestingly, the outer face (towards the ditch) of this wall was constructed of granite, a material not so far recorded as a general building stone on the Dock Lines within Brickfields or Cumberland House. The locations of these features indicated that they formed part of the 1853-68 refurbishment of the Dock Lines, with the scarp wall forming part of the defences of Frederick's Bastion. [Au(adp)] |
