Abstract:
An archaeological excavation of the site was undertaken as a condition upon planning consent for the residential development of the site. Two earlier evaluations across the site had uncovered evidence of medieval and post-medieval activity, including the remains of the old Battersea Manor House which was known to predate the recently demolished flour mills. As a result of this an open area excavation was undertaken. The preliminary assessment of the excavation results indicated multi-period activity on the site from the 12th century through to the present day. Medieval timber structures dating from the 12th-13th centuries were encountered as well as the fragmentary remains of a post-medieval Manor House complex with a second phase consisting of a more extensively preserved Manor above this. A variety of artefacts were recovered fromt the activity on site. [Au(adp)]
