Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and discussions with the County Archaeological Officer and others established that parts of the site had been quarried and were therefore of no archaeological interest. However, in unquarried parts of the site, particularly alluvium covered areas, a high archaeological potential was identified for the occurrence of later prehistoric and Roman settlement with related environmental evidence. The study also identified a significant potential for more recent periods; during the Late Saxon period Viking burials may have occurred on the site, and a medieval watermill may also have dated back to that period. Given the archaeological wealth of the nearby Nene Valley, it appeared highly likely that significant archaeological deposits would be encountered within the study site. [Au(adp)] |
