Abstract:
The site was located in an area of archaeological activity dating from the prehistoric to the post-medieval periods. There was evidence for a substantial Romano-British settlement, which may have given rise to the 'Burgh' element of the name. The excavation of 4 trenches, two of which lay across the line of a large Romano-British ditch (that had been identified during a former watching brief) showed evidence of later re-cuts. A number of other parallel features were identified, suggesting a substantial and long-lined boundary, containing medieval pottery in the upper fill that implied that this boundary had remained a significant landscape feature for some time. At least one Saxon/later feature seemed to have been cut along the same line. The finds assemblages suggested a multi-period dating from the Iron Age, but with higher occupancy during the late Roman period and continued activity into the Saxon period. Although no direct evidence of settlement was recovered this must have lain in the general vicinity, possibly on the higher ground closer. [Au(adp)]
