Abstract: |
An L-shaped area of c.486 square metres in the eastern half of the site was machine excavated down to 18th/19th century deposits and structures. A succession of buildings were revealed reflecting the fact that being located between the High Street and the River Thames, the site was historically prime development land. From the 15th century, the site was occupied by two properties which were built on narrow burgage plots until the late 17th century when they were amalgamated into one property. The western structure included an outbuilding with a number of hearths which may have been used for small-scale industrial processes or baking. The eastern property contained a room closer to the riverfront with two decorative floor surfaces. The late 17th century building was at least three storeys tall and of high status, and was demolished in the early 19th century. An 18th century hexagonal brick structure was found in the western half of the site and may have been an industrial tank or an ornamental pond. [Au(abr)] |
