Abstract:
The archaeological impact assessment was concentrated on the site of Wardrobe Court in advance of possible redevelopment. The report considered the potential archaeological remains on the site and the likely impact on these by proposed redevelopment. The report concluded that the site was in an area of archaeological and historical interest. Previous excavation had revealed Roman pottery and features while 1st and 2nd century clay-and-timber buildings had been found nearby to the north and north-west of this site and may have survived across it. Little was known of the immediate area around Wardrobe Place in the Roman period and any additional information would have added to local knowledge of the growth and decline of this part of the Roman city. An infilled watercourse, the 'Western Stream', was also of importance and waterlain deposits as may be expected often produce a rich assemblage of finds and environmental data. Excavation across the site had previously revealed infilled stream channels and undisturbed channel deposits. Finds from the early medieval/ Norman period had been found on the site, including masonry possibly associated with King's Wardrobe (c.1359-1666), and in the immediate vicinity. The close proximity of the site to the supposed early medieval defences of the city may produce evidence of the location of Montfichet's Tower. [Au(adp)]
