Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during development groundworks for a traditional Japanese house. The site was located within the Bamboo Garden at Kew, c.200m east from the River Thames, at c.4.65m OD. From plans including Rocque (1746) and a first edition OS 25-inch map of 1867 it could be seen that the area remained relatively unchanged until the late 19th century. According to Kew Gardens staff the Bamboo Garden was constructed in 1891, which correlated with evidence drawn from a third edition OS 25 inch map from 1913, which showed considerable new landscaping in the Gardens, including the addition of the Bamboo Garden. A series of foundation trenches and one square pit were dug during the watching brief, with plans and section drawings taken of areas that showed archaeological potential. The depth of the foundation trenches was approximately 1.5m. The upper sequence of stratigraphy consisted of c.0.3m topsoil, which was spread evenly across the whole site. The majority of the soil horizons were severely disturbed by subsequent machine action and poor weather conditions. Archaeological potential was predominant in the southernmost extent of the site, where a series of linear features were revealed, presumably planting beds for the bamboo from the late 19th century. To the west of the site was a mid-red sandy layer containing a few pieces of fairly recent building material and one piece of bone. [Au(abr)] |
