Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. The early history of the surrounding area was not known, but it had been suggested that the adjacent Towcester Road, the line of which had formerly crossed the site, had originated as a Saxon road. During the evaluation, a pre-19th century soil horizon containing a few abraded sherds of medieval pottery was found to have been preserved beneath the shallow footings of 19th century buildings. Where the former Towcester Road should have crossed the site, there was in excess of 1350mm of recently made-up ground, and any earlier levels had been removed. [Au(adp)] |
