Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out on the excavation of a lift shaft in the State Apartments of St. James's Palace. The excavation produced evidence for the location of the medieval leper hospital and suggests that the date of its foundation was either shortly before or shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066. There was also evidence for the documented 13th century destruction and rebuilding of the hospital. The evidence for the first Tudor Palace consisted of the crushed red brick surface of the original of the Colour Court. Above this surface were a series of new surfaces which represented various stages in the history of the Colour Court until the partial destruction of the palace in a fire in 1809. [Au(abr)] |
