Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the refurbishment of Fletcher's House, Park Street, Woodstock. It was discovered that the house incorporated the cellar of an earlier building, but the earliest part of the house above ground was that built in 1613/14 by Alderman Thomas Browne. The house was found to have been a double-pile house consisting of two almost parallel ranges. Several features of this house were uncovered during the watching brief, including a concealed window, a blocked fireplace and evidence for two dismantled limestone chimney stacks between the two ranges. There was also evidence that there had once been a principal stair in the centre of the north range, creating the symmetry common to the compact form of the double-pile houses. The investigations confirmed that, though much altered, the early 17th century house still existed, and that no further bays had been lost during the construction of the late 18th century eastern extension. This evidence confirmed that although 1613/14 was a very early date to such a double-pile house to be built in a small market town, the main features discovered did not contradict the date as recorded in the contemporary documentary sources. The work also enabled an understanding of the changes in the domestic functions and requirements in the late 18th century house, and how this impacted on the form of the earlier house. A further discovery beneath a floor in the house was a pit containing a good assemblage of mid-to late 12th century pottery, which had greatly increased the corpus of medieval pottery available for study in Woodstock.
