Abstract:
The watching brief was maintained during works at the 'Hospital of St John the Baptist without the bars of Lichfield. The groundworks included new foundations outside of the west wall of the east range and the lowering of the floor inside the building. The external foundation trenches exposed the footings of the late 15th century building, but no adjoining or earlier structures were identified. Internally, only a sandstone linear feature and a small portion of an early brick and tile floor were recorded in situ. The former predated the hospital wing and was interpreted as a medieval site boundary; the latter sealed a pit containing a medieval potsherd. The most useful evidence recorded during the watching brief was a number of mortices and pegholes; these were used below as the basis of a reconstruction drawing illustrating the original layout of the range, with a row of chambers on the ground- and first floors, served by a corridor along the west side of the building. In the light of the history of the hospital and on typological grounds this arrangement was ascribed to c.1495 or some time later. [Au(abr)]
