Abstract: |
The site lay on the south side of Ham Hill. Ham Hill had been the focus of archaeological study over a long period. It was the largest hillfort in Britain and excavations had revealed that settlement dated from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. A Roman villa was excavated in the early part of the 20th century. Previous geophysical survey had indicated the presence of extensive field systems and settlement features. The aim of the survey was to locate and identify the nature and extent of any archaeological remains that may have been present within a proposed quarry extension. Ditch systems enclosing probable occupation features were recorded throughout the site. The anomalies were consistent in type and orientation with those recorded in previous surveys in adjacent fields. The densest concentrations of anomalies were located in the southernmost part of the survey area. These might have been associated with settlement immediately inside the hillfort rampart or they may have been a consequence of former quarrying. [Au(abr)] |
