Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site. If Walker's earthworks to the northeast did represent an earthwork camp, the potential of the site increased in significance. Cambridge was an important Roman centre, but the nature of organisation outside of the main town was less well understood. Should remains survive within the site, the implications for mapping and understanding the approaches to Roman Cambridge were significant. The precise route of the Via Devana road into the town was far from certain. The observations in the Perse School grounds indicated conclusively that the earlier route did run off the line of the modern Hills Road and the later line probably related to the 'causeway, constructed in the 18th century. Confirmation of this would contribute to the understanding of a Roman hinterland. The recent field work on the Brookland's Avenue site had demonstrated that agricultural features remained in this hinterland, whether there was settlement of the density now being revealed ion the western side of Cambridge remained to be seen.
