Abstract: |
The proposed site for a large supermarket development was shown to be partly situated in an area likely to contain substantial Roman remains. The site was adjacent to known Roman burial areas, close to areas where excavations had previously revealed sections of the Roman town wall, and the western portion of the site comprised an area designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The railway line, built in 1841, and the remains of canal feeder, finished in 1789, were also located on the proposed development site. [AIP] |
