Abstract:
The assessment concluded that the potential for remains of all past periods of human activity, prior to the 19th century, was low. Evidence for land division or agricultural activity may have been present. In the 19th century, a very small isolation hospital was established on the site, apparently part of the Welwyn Union Workhouse (later Welwyn Children's Home). From at least 1947 the isolation hospital was in use as offices by Welwyn Rural District Council. Map evidence and observation on site indicated that the Isolation Hospital buildings were either demolished or completely rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The west and centre of the site had undergone severe post-depositional impacts due to terracing to create level platforms for buildings and hard standing for car parks. Archaeological deposits on the east of the site would now be deeply buried under fill deposits associated with the A1(M). Because of the generally low archaeological potential and the impact of past development and land use it was considered unlikely that the proposed development would have any archaeological impact.
