Abstract:
The majority of the site lay on the western slope of Headington Hill, with its very eastern edge lying on the relatively flat area of the top of the hill. The topographic situation of the eastern area of the site would therefore have had a greater potential for settlement and other archaeological activity of all periods. Moreover, this area of Headington Hill was certainly utilised during the Civil War by the Parliamentarians for defences, although the exact location of the western side of the fort had not yet been established. Six trenches were investigated revealing evidence dating to the post-medieval period, with one natural feature also being identified in Trench 2. With the exception of Trench 6, all trenches revealed a sequence of topsoil and colluvium overlying natural sand, with a calcareous limestone outcrop also identified in Trench 1. The down-slope trenches generally revealed thicker colluvial cover of up to 0.65m, whilst trenches 1 and 3 only had a cover of 0.20m. Trench 6 revealed modern disturbances overlying natural sand, into which a circular 19th century pit was cut. The pottery from the colluvium in Trenches 1 and 3 dated from 1580-1800, and may have indicated that these areas of the site experienced more post-medieval human activity. [Au(abr)]
