Abstract: |
The assessment concluded that significant archaeological remains of all periods probably survived beneath the modern basement slab. Remains of the Roman period were likely to include elements of timber and masonry buildings as well as a section of one of the principal highways of the Roman city. Deeply cut features such as cellars, wells and cesspits would most probably represent later periods. In general, it was thought that the impact of 19th and early 20th century buildings on the site would be limited to the location of deep foundations. Excavations on parts of the site in 1955 and 1958 prior to, and during, the construction of the present building showed that archaeological remains present on the site had not been destroyed by earlier modern development and were of the type indicated by other nearby finds.
