Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at a proposed development site, after an evaluation had revealed stratified deposits. Make-up layers and floor surfaces associated with the 18th century Howland Great Wet Dock were recorded, and a probable drainage ditch was found. Features relating to a whaling station were recorded, including two roads, wall foundations and a brick structure. The latter may have been the base for a copper in which whale blubber would have been boiled. The remains of a later quayside and warehouse complex were also observed. Fragments of whale-bone, post-medieval building material, pottery and coins were recovered. [AIP] |
