Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the demolition of a bungalow which was located to the south of Lower Farm. Documentary evidence indicated that there may have been a settlement at Alderley from the medieval period onwards, although an assessment of two buildings at the farm had suggested that one dated from the late 18th-early 19th century, whilst the second dated from the late 19th-early 20th century. A subsequent watching brief had found that post-medieval activity had been centred on Lower Farm, but had recorded no earlier deposits or features. During demolition of the bungalow, a possible cultivation soil was observed but no artefacts were recovered. The potential location of open fields to the south of Lower Farm supported an earlier suggestion that the focus of medieval activity and settlement at Aldersley may have lain to the east of the farm site.
