Abstract: |
The farmhouse at Old Court Farm, Bosbury, probably retains within it elements of a former palace of the Bishops of Hereford. Substantial remains of the gatehouse to this palace are preserved within the southern block of farm buildings facing on to the lane leading north from the village. Plans are being developed for the conversion of the farmstead, including several hop kilns and the gatehouse, to residential use. The City of Hereford Archaeology Unit was commissioned to undertake an outline analysis of the farm buildings, as well as detailed survey work on the two sides of the former gate-passage within the gatehouse. The survey considered all the buildings within the development area excepting the farmhouse, to which no changes are anticipated. The earliest surviving element of the bishop's palace above ground is clearly the gatehouse, possibly dating to the late-13th century but perhaps just a little later. Of this, the masonry facade survives surprisingly intact, but the two surviving posts of the timber-framing of its other three walls need to be carefully preserved. Excluding the house and the extension to the south of the original gatehouse, there are few tangible signs that reflect the period between the early 14th century and the latter part of the 18th. At that time it seems that the gatehouse was refurbished - with a new first floor and a rebuilt roof, as well as a stable or loose box in the northern portion - and was almost certainly a part of the main farmstead. Most of the surviving buildings date to a radical rebuilding programme carried out in two main stages in the second half of the 19th century. The older farmstead centred on the gatehouse was radically reduced in size and converted into a hop processing area, whilst a new farmstead was built to the north. The gatehouse is a SAM and is listed Grade II. Old Court Farmhouse is listed Grade II.[AIP] |
