Abstract: |
In May 1994, at the request of the Engineering Services Department of Hereford City Council, the City of Hereford Archaeology Unit prepared a desk-based assessment of the site of the precinct of the Blackfriars monastery in Widemarsh Street. The assessment was prepared as one of a series of documents to enable the various options for a new sewage pipeline in this area to be fully evaluated. Due to the inconvenience and high costs involved should the line of the trench follow the line of Widemarsh Street, options of crossing the Blackfriars precinct, part of which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, were considered. A major conclusion of the desk-top assessment was that the only course which was worth pursuing further was one running to the west of the school, then between the Coningsby Hospital and the Preaching Cross, and finally northwards across the tennis courts to the Tan Brook; all other courses were likely to damage archaeologically significant deposits. It was recommended that a geophysical survey could provide information from which this potential route could be evaluated.[AIP]\n\n |
