Abstract: |
Of these sites recorded within, and adjacent to, the study area, just over 40% were industrial sites such as quarries, foundries, and mills or 'works'. The narrow riverside study area naturally included a high proportion of sites that required large volumes of water either to power a water wheel, to supply a steam engine or to supply industrial processes. The vast majority of the industrial sites were associated with the textile industry, which formerly dominated the economy and landscape of Lancashire. [Au(adp)] |
