Abstract:
Test pits were dug in two fields as part of the larger programme of archaeological investigation along the route of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The spoil from the test pits was seived to recover any finds. The quantity of Mesolithic flints recovered was not consistent with the earlier recorded scatters in Harrietsham. Colluvial deposits were identified in five test pits on the slopes down to the River Len and medieval pottery recovered from one of them suggested that none of the colluvation was earlier than the medieval period. The bulk of the flint recovered was Neolithic in date, medieval pottery and a single Bronze Age sherd were also found. No in situ prehistoric deposits were identified, but a medieval feature, possibly a ditch, was located in the base of one of the test pits. [Au(abr)]
