Abstract: |
<summary>A survey was undertaken of the County Gaol complex, located behind Shire Hall. The earliest remains, probably of 17th century date, included a rock-hewn dungeon, whilst 18th century features included a small range of cells and the Gaoler's House (which retained much of its early 18th century brickwork, but was substantially remodelled a century later). 19th century additions included a two-storeyed brick range comprising day rooms on the ground floor and sleeping cells over, with a later extension with enclosed ground floor rooms and a laundry, washroom and drying chamber. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
