Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment which involved construction within the existing building footprint, with an extension towards Mitre Square at the southern corner. The site lay in the north-east corner of the Roman and medieval City of London adjacent to the city wall and to the north-west of Aldgate. The area around the site had been subject to intensive excavation which had revealed phases of the Roman and medieval city as well as masonry and timber buildings, and short stretches of roads. There was little sign of early Saxon activity but a 10th -11th century cemetery was excavated to the south of the site. In 1108 the Holy Trinity Priory was founded and the proposed development site lay over part of the cloister (possibly containing burials), the kitchen and the north end of the Priors house. During the 17th and 18th centuries the surrounding area was used for industrial purposes such as potting. Sephardic Jews began to settle in the area in the late 17th century and a synagogue was established on the site in 1679, rebuilt in 1701 and expanded throughout the century. By the late 19th century the site was occupied by shops, dwellings and warehouses grouped around the Great Synagogue. The present building on the site was constructed in 1971 and replaced a temporary car park and ruined buildings and warehouses. International House had extensive basements which would have removed most of the late and post-Roman deposits, apart from surviving deep foundations of the Priory. The new basement of the proposed development would be no deeper than that existing and it will retain the existing building outline apart from a small extension in the southern part of the site.
