Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed conversion of the derelict 1832 building to an office block. The quantity of prehistoric material in the surrounding area showed that there was intensive settlement and farming along the Middle Thames valley, particularly in the Bronze Age. The site lay close to the nucleus of the Roman and later settlements, but away from the gravel island and any archaeological remains. In the medieval and post-medieval periods the area appeared to have been little use of the site other than agricultural or gardens. Rocque in the mid 18th century showed it as marginal land and the first known use was as the Bush Gardens, a late 18th or early 19th century development. In the 1830's the gardens were destroyed when the new bridge was built and Clarence Road laid out. The land was then used for housing, the building of which still occupied the site. [Au(adp)] |
