Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that large quantities of Roman pottery wasters had been found at Northgate House in 1935, indicating the proximity of a kiln. A 1995 evaluation of this part of the proposal area had further established that the Northgate House/Kent House site would contain features evidencing buildings and other structures of this period, with contemporary floors and yard surfaces and evidence of domestic and industrial activity, possibly associated with the pottery industry. It was considered possible that medieval deposits could have survived at the site, although it was anticipated that truncation by current basements would have removed virtually all deposits of this date. It was recommended that a programme of archaeological excavation should be carried out. [AIP]
