Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological setting of the Conservation Area. Prehistoric activity was absent. Romano-British artefacts had been found to the east, possibly related to settlement, identified from cropmarks. A Saxon Elloe Stone Cross (a SAM) was identified in the northeast, believed to have been the meeting place of the Hundred of Elloe. Sea Banks, of possible Saxon date survived to the south of the village. Moulton also appeared in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 indicating a Late Saxon precursor to the medieval village. The medieval settlement was believed to have centred on the only surviving medieval building, All Saints church. The post-medieval period brought prosperity to the village including the construction of the tallest windmill in the country and several houses. Further housing construction took place during the late 19th century and continued into the 20th century. Absence of previous sub-surface investigation within the town limits highlighted a pressing requirement for such works. [Au(abr)]
