Abstract: |
A watching brief was held over the excavation of a pit for a septic tank within a moated enclosure, this was to be connected by a trench across the moat to another pit for a soakaway outside the moat to the south. The removal of modern debris and silting from existing sections of the moat was also monitored. The edges of an earlier moat channel were exposed during the work, but no archaeological deposits within the enclosure were identified. It was notable that no medieval pottery was found within the moat during the removal of silt deposits, this suggested that at sometime in the post-medieval period it had been completely re-dug or cleaned. It was clear that the moat had at some time been connected to a pond at the north-western corner. [Au(adp)] |
