Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, which was located inside the Roman town of Caesaromagus. Remains of the town defences had been identified at a nearby site, whilst timber framed buildings dating to the 1st century had been found in the near vicinity, beneath evidence of 2nd century industrial activity. During the evaluation, the remnants of a 19th century brick wall were revealed, and a deposit which was probably of 15th-16th century date was recorded. This deposit contained six sherds of Roman pottery and five 15th-16th century sherds. Evidence indicated that any archaeological deposits surviving above a depth of 1.2m, the depth of the two test-pits excavated, were likely to have been significantly truncated by 18th century and later intrusions, and may have been preserved only as small pockets of material.
