Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that the area had been used principally for arable farming, and subsequently as orchards and allotments, and had first been developed in the 19th century. Part of the surviving structure of Saul Lodge, a Grade II Listed Building, lay within the site. A prehistoric barrow and Iron Age pottery had been recorded within Frampton on Severn, and the possible alignment of a Roman road bordered one end of the site. Saxon pottery and a group of possible Saxon burials had been found in the area. The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal bordered the site, whilst a toll house and a Grade II Listed milestone lay adjacent to it. It was recommended that a programme of archaeological recording should be undertaken in advance of development. [AIP] |
