Abstract: |
A watching brief during opencast coal extraction revealed the sites of 18 discrete former mine workings, mainly bell pits, at a depth of around 18m below the modern ground surface. The pits could have dated from the late medieval period. However, the lack of any specific documentary evidence or diagnostic finds meant that it was impossible to ascribe a close date to them.
