Abstract:
The works comprised two evaluation trenches, two episodes of archaeological monitoring, an area of excavation, and a photographic survey of architectural features on the site. In area A, thirteen or possibly fourteen wood-lined tanning pits were defined by a stone wall; a cobbled surface had been built against this. The tanning pits had been backfilled with waste material from local industries; this material was also dumped across the site to level up the area. The southern half of the site had a surface of broken pantile, and a shallow pantile-filled pit. A square brick structure was also recorded. A well was identified c.25m to the west of the main area of excavation. In area B 18th century landscaping, an early 19th century forge, and two later 19th century industrial structures were identified. A brick-built sewer of the late 19th or early 20th century was also recorded. In Area C established the presence of a horn-core filled gully associated with 7 tanning pits was identified. A stone well of unknown date was also present. To the north-east of these was a 6.5m long stretch of mid-19th century stone culvert. Around 15m to the west of this was a 20th century brick circular chimney. [Au(abr)]
